HERITAGE HOUSE CAFÉ: DOING OUR PART FOR THE ENVIRONMENT
At the Heritage House Café we do everything we can to keep green.  Here are some of our ways in helping the Haliburton environment:

No Plastic or Styrofoam

  • All coffee cups are made of recycled paper and are recyclable
  • All  bottled water & beverages are in glass bottles instead of plastic
  • Food and gift items come in paper bags that are made of recycled paper and are recyclable

Coffee Grounds

  • All coffee grounds are used as compost in the garden.  Ask at the counter if you would like grounds for your garden.

Biodegradable Soaps

  • All our hand soaps & dishwashing liquids are biodegradable and environmentally friendly

All Natural Bath Products

  • We have designed our own line of all natural bath products. These products are soft enough that they won’t harm your septic system.
  • The line comes in reusable glass containers! Bring the containers back and refill them with our wonderful body products.

Solar Outdoor Lights

  • All night light polluters are turned off. Inside the café we use soy candles. Outside we light your way with solar outdoor lights on the patio.

Reused 1863 wood
Original barn boards have been salvaged from parts of the house and reused for the café counter and tables.

Coming Soon: Soy Candles

  • We will have our own line of soy candles, which are cleaner burning and better for the environment.

FEATURED ARTIST: ALEXANDER JOWETT
Nomadic soul and contemporary artist, Alex Jowett, likens himself to a  'Kanye West of the art world.'   "I'm not here to invent a new style and become a slave to it.  Art in the new millennium is about constant re-invention and re-interpretation.  Like a music producer/rapper/musician I am not creating a new style (art) but am here to re-work the old into the new and remind people of where we have been, where we are, and where we might be going."

THE BUILDING
This unique building was built sometime between 1863 and 1870.
The town records are unclear as to the exact date; however, the house does predate many of the older houses in town.  In 1988 the former Banks Store now called the Heritage House Café was deemed a Heritage Building and the oldest commercial establishment in Haliburton by the town of Dysart et al. Originally built by Boyd and Irwin as a store to service lumber jacks and farmers. Over the hundred years plus, it has been a post office, general store, hair salon and café , upstairs even had a bowling alley in the 1930’s. The Store even has its own poem, written by Ed Miller.  More to come on the history of the building in next month’s coffee news... Stay tuned..
